The American transit bus scene of the 1970s saw little variety: The two main models were either the GM New Look bus, or the Flxible New Look, and both were quite similar. But, in 1974, a third manufacturer that had not built buses before, had decided to enter the transit bus market. AM General, an automotive manufacturer that had many government contracts with entites such as the US Post Office and the US Army, believed that buses could be a lucrative market. Their new bus, dubbed the "Metropolitan," had a very problematic start when the first buses were delivered to Washington, DC. While there were some improvements during its production run from 1974 to 1978, it was never able to shake off its reputation of having inadequate quality control. A total of 5,212 buses were built for 61 transit systems. Which, actually, was more buses built per year than Flxible. See and hear the story of the AM General Metropolitan! And as always, thank you so much for watching, liking, commenting and sharing my videos!
