Virdul Murideen is a 450-verse Sufi treatise in Persian verse, composed by Allama Baba Dawood Khaki in honour of his spiritual guide, Sultan ul-Arifeen Shaykh Hamza Makhdoom (R.A.) — a 16th-century Sufi saint who profoundly shaped Kashmir’s religious and social landscape. Baba Dawood Khaki (R.A.), a leading scholar and Shaykh Hamza’s foremost disciple, draws from over 200 classical Islamic texts to craft a rich spiritual roadmap for seekers. The work cites and builds upon the teachings of towering figures such as Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (R.A.), Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A.), Hazrat Owais Qarni (R.A.) Bayazid Bistami (R.A.), Junayd Baghdadi (R.A.), Hazrat Shaykh Shahabuddin Suhrawardi (R.A.), the founder of the Suharwardiya order, Shaykh Najmuddin Kubra (R.A.), the founder of the Kubrawiya order, Imam al-Ghazali (R.A.), and Ibn Arabi (R.A.). Their insights are woven into a devotional framework rooted in the lived example of Shaykh Hamza Makhdoomi (R.A.) More than hagiography, Virdul Murideen offers timeless guidance on spiritual discipline (suluk), ethics, divine love, and the responsibilities of discipleship. Allama Showkat Hussain Keng Qadiri, one of Kashmir’s foremost Islamic scholars and historians, and a guardian of its mystical tradition, presents this ongoing lecture series to bring the luminous teachings of Virdul Murideen to new generations of Kashmiris.
