In the thick forests bordering the Mangoky River, in southwestern Madagascar, live the Bara. These semi-nomadic forest people, with secular traditions, share their territory with an animal of a thousand legends: the lambo, a wild boar considered to be king of the forest. To demonstrate his courage and to make sure that his descendants will have the necessary qualities for surviving in the forest, a man must bring to his wife the feet of a lambo before the end of her pregnancy. That is why Doula has come to see Naouda, who is the best hunter in Mangoky country. Doula’s wife is going to give birth soon, and Doula must bring her the feet of a lambo, in order for the child to have the qualities of the most powerful animal in the Mangoky forest.
