Ever wondered what vintage UK prison drama 'Within These Walls' would be like if it featured incidental music - and particularly the same incidental music as vintage Australian prison drama 'Prisoner Cell Block H'?! Well, wonder no longer… The main storyline of the episode ‘Long Shadows’ focuses on inmate Susan Carpenter and her relationship with the imaginary figures of her long-lost parents, whom she believes are career criminals and provide the inspiration, or justification, for her own involvement in crime. A complimentary subplot, meanwhile, concerns Susan’s cellmate and close friend, Helen Cheeseman. Helen is also a young, middle-class, highly educated woman, and, like Susan, appears to be disproportionately defined by the role her parents have played in her life, including in terms of her ending up behind bars. In Helen’s case, though, she actually knows her mother and father and was raised by them in a very comfortable and superficially happy home. However, despite the parents’ outward respectability, she finds them wanting – and then some… Her dad runs a prolific daily newspaper (which sounds like a cross between ‘The Sun’ and ‘The Daily Mail’- *shudder*!) and has frequently been absent from everyday family life, instead occupied by work, material gain and extramarital affairs; her mum, meanwhile, has responded to the absence of a proper husband by turning in on herself and regularly drinking – a situation the young Helen then had to deal with, and always from behind closed doors. Now Helen is inside on drug smuggling charges (a symptom of her having gone off the rails) and only ever receives visits from her mother, who always chastises her for the shame she’s brought on the family. But today, she’s finally receiving a visit from her otherwise too-busy dad - but the troubled nature of their relationship comes straight to the fore, with Helen keen to tell him some home truths, as she sees them… With PCBH library music added for effect (tracks: 'Dark Glass (a)', ‘Solitude (a)’ and ‘Prism (b)’, all by Dennis Farnon and from the KPM Music LP 'Pictures from the Life')! Scene features (in order of first appearance): Bernard Gallagher (as Mr. Cheeseman); Gillian Hawser (as Helen Cheeseman); and Jumoke Debayo (as Officer Carto).
