Diversity, inclusion, and Me Too discussed at Sports Illustrated Swimsuit launch party

(15 Feb 2018) DIVERSITY, INCLUSION, AND ME TOO DISCUSSED ON SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT LAUNCH PARTY Danielle Herrington and Tyra Banks feel the diversity of body types in this year's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue makes the annual photo spread more inclusive than ever before. Herrington, who appears on the cover this year, was joined by swimsuit models and celebrity guests at the annual launch party Wednesday (14 FEB. 2018) in New York. "I think it's super important because I feel like when people are flipping through the magazine they can see themselves in it. You know, they can feel a part of it and feel like they can own, you know, being on the beach in a bikini or whatever they want to wear. So I think it's amazing," Herrington said. Banks sees the inclusion of plus-size models and people of color expand the definition of what we consider beautiful. I'm about expanding the definition of beauty and showing that there's more than one type of beauty. And so by her being on that cover, she's that representative to show that beauty comes in all colors, and not in a niche way, but in a mass way for it to be accessible to everybody. Every person that looks at that magazine cover walking by it sees beauty, no matter what your background and so, super important," she said. Herrington is the third black woman to appear on the cover of the annual issue that launched in 1964. Beyonce appeared on the cover in 2007.  Banks was the cover model in 1996 and 1997. Another model in this year's issue - former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo - feels she's learned a lot about herself along the way. "I noticed my personal journey with this was very empowering. I had to dig deep and I had to think about what exactly I wanted to represent in my photo shoot. And I hope that my vulnerability allows other women to realize that were not as different as we think and that we really are all in this together." For Plus-Size model Ashley Graham, it's all about expressing yourself, regardless of your body type. "Well, for me taking ownership of my body and taking ownership of my story and my sexuality is huge. And having S.I. be a part of that with me is - it's incredible because they have totally backed me and everything that I've said that I've done and they allowed me to do it in my photo shoot. So I think there's something really great about a woman just expressing herself, whichever way she chooses," she said. The influence of the #MeToo movement was also evident at the gala, despite the photos being shot before the movement heated up last fall. Kate Upton expressed the importance that empowerment shouldn't just come from the victims. "I think for women feeling empowered to speak their stories is very important. I also think that the people around who are seeing it happening need to speak out. It doesn't have to always be the victim. It needs to be people who know what's right and want to make change, even if it's not happening to them," Upton said. Upton has a simple request. "I don't think it's so much to ask for women in a professional setting to be treated as professionals," Upton said. Upton appears in this year's issue, and graced the cover last year. It was her third. Cover alum is Paulina Porizkova, who appeared on back to back swimsuit issue covers in the eighties. She feels there's a fine line in objectifying and empowering women, saying that the swimsuit issue leans toward the latter.  But what about the fashion industry? Then she was asked about sexual harassment in the fashion industry, and offered her perspective.
