Winter drive along the A949 to Invershin

Today we’re taking a peaceful winter drive along the A949, from the A9 through to Invershin. This route winds its way alongside Dornoch and the Firth estuary, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape, especially with the crisp winter air and low sun over the hills. After passing through Bonar Bridge, the road opens up to reveal the beautiful Kyle of Sutherland — an estuary formed by the meeting of the Oykel and Cassley rivers. From this confluence, it stretches around ten miles downstream to Bonar Bridge, where it widens and flows into the Dornoch Firth. Along its course, it’s joined by the rivers Shin and Carron, creating a network of waterways that mark the traditional boundary between Ross-shire and Sutherland. There are several lay-bys along the way, perfect for pulling over to take in the peaceful scenery or snap a few photos of the landscape. At the end of the drive, in Invershin, you’ll find a small lay-by with a distinctive metal bridge crossing over the water. It’s a great spot to stretch your legs and take in the views — but be warned, if you’re not great with heights, the footplates are made from open grid metal, so you can see straight through to the river below! 👉 Want me to help you reach your first 3k subscribers ?
