from 189th St. Digital Media backups "The Outliers" is a rare documentary produced by the BBC over a quarter of a century ago. It is narrated by a young George Dalaras for an English speaking audience. There are also segments with a young Stelios Vamvakaris, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, as well as the only known existing movie images of pre World War II rebetic icons Babis Bakalis, George Mouflouzeli, and Sofia Karivalis Outliers refers to the fact that Greek rebetiko music came out of the impoverished Ottoman Greek refugees who were exiled from Asia Minor after the catastrophe there in 1922. The one million refugees were not welcome and considered outliers by Greece. They lived in poverty in refugee camps in the outskirts of Athens and Thesaloniki. Their music evolved at the same time as the American blues and had similar themes. These Refugees performed their music in illegal hash dens called "tekedes" which were often raided by the police. A half a century later they became accepted in Greece, as did their music, which had been censored for decades. The songs spoke of of exile, love, death, love, drug addiction, broken hearts, and other everyday matters, both happy and sad. In 1974 censorship was lifted and today the songs have seen a nostalgic revival among Greeks who see the music as part of their modern history and musical heritage. from 189th St. Digital Media backupshttp://vimeo.com/66958247 Αυτονοητο για οσους εχουν στοιχειωδη ευφυια και ΔΕΝ διακατεχονται απο μισαλλοδοξια ειναι οτι : H αρχικη καταγραφη των εικονων ΔΕΝ ειναι δικη μου.
