As promised in last week's video description, here's another throwback cover...! We're heading all the way back to 2002 for this one (& way up north!): "One By One" by #IMMORTAL ! You can also stream this cover wherever you get your music (thanks to cover licenses being quite easy to acquire these days!). I'll put links to Spotify & AppleMusic below, but you can find it pretty much anywhere (just search my name!). Anyways - Spotify: https://bit.ly/4kKROjI AppleMusic: https://bit.ly/46gfgSm In case you're unfamiliar / aren't into this kinda music (& thus haven't heard of them), Immortal is a Black Metal band from Norway. They've been around a pretty long time, actually - their first release was in the early 90's. However, the first album's that personally got me into the band came a bit later - 'At The Heart Of Winter' (1999), Damned In Black (2000), & the album this song is from: 'Sons Of Northern Darkness' (2002)! Lol, sidenote: Although those were the first album's of theirs that I got into, I didn't actually get into them until way later. Like, late 2000's / early 2010's. I was born at the end of 1991, & the first one I listed above was released in 1999... I would've barely been 8 😂😂). As much as I'd like to tell you that I was the coolest 8 year old ever, listening to sick Black Metal, I definitely didn't discover these album's until later. At ANY rate: To this day, 'Sons Of Northern Darkness' is my favorite of the bunch, & "One By One" is sort of the quintessential song from it (in my opinion!). So naturally, I had to cover that one. Originally, I tried using an A.I. splitter, but one thing I've noticed about the A.I. splitters.... they really don't work very well on older music. Actually, scratch that... it's probably less about age, & more about the quality (or lack-thereof)... i.e., music that doesn't have the greatest production. Haha. Which, I guess makes sense... if things aren't particularly clear, A.I. probably has a much tougher time picking things apart & trying to recreate it all (with clarity). So I ended up asking my long-time friend Gunter Ostendorp to do the guitars. Gunter is the guitarist from my old band Ordinance (from way back in the day!). He wrote most of that stuff. Also (fun fact): Gunter actually introduced me to Kevin Heiderich, the other guitarist that has done some guitars for me in various other covers in recent years! & Kevin then introduced me to Johnny Ciardullo, & Erlend Caspersen (other dude's who've partaken in some of those covers!). In other words: Big shoutout to Gunter, cuz without him I might not have done any of that stuff with those dudes! AND, the vocals in the video were done by another guy I've known since back in the day, Chad Hill! Ironically, Gunter ALSO introduced me to him...! (but like, when we were kids. Lol. I've known Chad for almost as long at this point). Anyways: Chad's sick, & his vocal style worked really well for this song (very black metal & hella sick). Will put some links to his band's below: Chad's bands: / greylotusmetal / darkest.before & one more fun sidenote: Gunter, Mike, & myself are actually working on a new Ordinance album. It'll be awhile before it's done, but it's slowly in the works. Never really thought we'd do another one, but I'm stoked that we are! So if any of the O.G. watchers that've followed my videos since WAY back are reading this... hopefully that's cool news to you! OH & (one more thing about Ordinance): Apparently, our older albums got taken off of streaming services, & none of us even noticed until VERY recently. Lol. But I took care of that & they've been re-added. So just in case you're interested, links are below (to the Ordinance album 'The Ides Of March'): Spotify: https://bit.ly/3GJaORs AppleMusic: https://bit.ly/4eMTuYz Got a little off topic but, back to this cover (in summarization!): It was a pretty random idea, but I love Black Metal, this song is sick, & the people that did the other instruments are sick, too (including the gentleman who did the mix... the one & only, absolute legend: DECLAN WHITE! 🤍🎤🎧). So yeah. That's a buncha REAL SICK stuff!
