Written in 2019/2020, when Ottilie was 9 years old, and performed at The Stoller Hall on 2 December 2020. Chetham's School of Music Composers' Concert. This piece was awarded runner up position in the Gloucestershire Music Open U21 Superheroes and Villains Competition 2020. The piece was written for string orchestra but is performed here by string quintet. Ezra Squall is a character in the Nevermoor series of books by Jessica Townsend. Ezra Squall is an evil wundersmith who uses his power for good and bad. Wunder is a cross between magic, wonder and electicity which can be used in many ways from powering homes to creating horrific, murderous shadow hunts. The Nevermoor series takes place in two places. The Wintersea Republic (oblivious to the existence of Nevermoor) and Nevermoor (which detests the Republic). For the Republic, Ezra is a feted hero who runs Squall Industries and runs their homes, but they don't know the truth. Nevermoor hate and fear him as he did many terrible things for which he was banished. He bides his time before his next attack which makes it even more frightening. Eleven years ago, another wundersmith was born, unbeknownst to everyone apart from Ezra Squall and Jupiter North. In the first book, she is rescued from the Republic and taken to Nevermoor by Jupiter, whilst being chased by the Hunt of Smoke and Shadow sent to catch her by Ezra. To begin with she has no knowledge of or control over her power. Ezra uses her to make attacks with wunder without her knowing, but also teaches her to control wunder. She is Morrigan Crow. This theme tune starts with the Republic's view of Ezra before moving into Nevermoor's view of him. It ends with his own view: controlled anger but sad and vengeful and his determination to gain control of Nevermoor once more.
