Katherine Grey: The Tudor Royal Lady who almost became Queen Lady Katherine Grey (1540-1568) was Lady Jane Grey’s younger sister. She was first in line to the English Throne when Lady Jane, Mary I and Elizabeth became Queen. However, due to her secret marriage to Edward Seymour, she was virtually disowned by Elizabeth, and her children were declared illegitimate. They did not end up inheriting the Throne as the English Parliament chose the House of Stuart instead. Chapters: 00:00 Katherine Grey 00:45 Katherine’s rights to inherit the English Throne 01:27 Losing her Father, Henry Grey, and older sister, Lady Jane Grey 02:24 The Heir to Mary and Elizabeth 02:53 Secret Marriage to Edward Seymour 03:20 Queen Elizabeth found out about the Secret Marriage 03:48 Imprisoned in the Tower of London, Two more Children 04:18 Forced Separation and Death of Katherine Grey 04:45 What if her descendant ascended to the Throne 05:42 Outro Katherine Grey or Katherine Seymour was the second daughter of Frances Grey and granddaughter of Mary Tudor. Katherine was best known for losing her succession rights due to her secret marriage According to Henry VIII’s succession plans, she was just behind Lady Jane Grey in the line of succession. When Edward VI died, his will made her sister the Queen, and Katherine was the first in line to succeed after her sister. However, Lady Jane Grey was only Queen for nine days. Henry VIII’s eldest daughter, Mary, deposed Jane and became Mary I of England. At the young age of 13 in 1554, Katherine lost both her father and sister. Mary executed Henry Grey for treason after he joined the Wyatt Rebellion to try and save his daughter. Due to Mary’s insecurities and Henry Grey’s participation in the rebellion, Mary executed Jane and her husband Guildford soon after. Katherine Grey, her mother, and her younger sister Mary survived after her mother, Frances Grey, begged Queen Mary for mercy. Further, The Herbert family annulled Katherine’s first engagement to their son, Henry Herbert. Interestingly, after Mary I became Queen, Katherine Grey was again the first in line to succeed her as she had no children and her sister, Elizabeth, was considered illegitimate. Even after Elizabeth became Queen, she was again the first in line to succeed Elizabeth, so she was the heir to the Throne three times for three different ladies. In 1560 at 20 years old, she fell in love and secretly married Edward Seymour, the son of Edward VI’s infamous uncle and Lord Protector. Due to her pregnancy after Elizabeth sent Edward Seymour as part of her delegation to tour Europe, she could no longer hide the secret marriage. Her attempts to get Beth of Hardwick or Robert Dudley to help her failed, and Dudley promptly reported the secret marriage to Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth was furious because Katherine never got her permission, and Katherine’s children were potential heirs to the English Throne, and Elizabeth did not want a Seymour heir. Elizabeth confined Edward Seymour and Katherine Grey in the Tower of London. The Lieutenant of the Tower, Edward Warner, allowed Katherine and Edward to visit each other secretly in the Tower of London. They had two children while imprisoned in the Tower. Even more furious, Queen Elizabeth annulled their marriage, declared her sons illegitimate and forced Katherine to separate from her husband and son. Katherine Grey died of tuberculosis in 1568, aged 28. Although Katherine’s son, Edward Seymour, was considered illegitimate, he was the most senior claimant after Elizabeth died according to Henry VIII’s will. However, the English parliament decided to support the Stuart line of Margaret Tudor, making James I the first Stuart King of England. If Edward Seymour became King instead of James I, there might not be the personal union between England and Scotland which created Great Britain. Further, the current Duke of Somerset might be the current English King, and the House of Seymour may be the present royal family.
