Roy and I tried labbing out MH2's PvP mode a little bit. We tried to come up with the dirtiest, most effective strategies we could, but we're both missing some armor skills that we think are very important for PvP, namely KO negate (for flashbombs) and High Grade Earplugs. My general gunning armor sets were stronger than Roy's so that alone gave me a big advantage, but ultimately running any set lacking HGE or KO negate is probably a bad idea in PvP. Some random observations: In all of my PvP matches so far, I've highly prioritized 'trolling' over 'hunting'. In this particular video, Roy was trying to only attack the monster and ignore me as much as possible. The 'skull' status effect that you get when you die only lasts 15 seconds, so there is a clear limit to how effective trolling can be. In most cases, I only managed to get 2 clusts off in the time it took for Roy to revive. So it's hard to say which approach is better. It's likely a bad idea to fit both KO negate and HGE on the same gunner set (requires 2 weapon deco slots, so you can't use good clust guns), so there will always probably be at least some room for trolling, but it may not be optimal. Of course, you could also just use para/sleep shots, which should work quite well if the opponent has slow reloads and long recoil because they're using defensive skills instead of gunning skills. As far as I can tell, melee weapons can't compete in PvP. Bowguns are just so good at trolling the other player, and black gravios requires too much setup time for melee weapons to be able to fight them. Like maybe a HGE water dual blades set could work. A gunner without HGE wouldn't even be able to troll them while they wail away on the roaring gravios. The main problem with that strategy is that Monsters are counterpicked AFTER weapons/armor are selected. If I see someone using water dual blades, I just pick a monster that's not weak to water against them. Clust is effective against every single monster, but melee weapons of a single element/status type generally aren't. One of the most favorable situations you can set up here is for your opponent to be stuck right to a roaring black gravios, while you are out of roar range and free to clust. It's much easier to set this up than actually having to kill your opponent yourself. It's even sometimes a good idea to flashbomb your own Grvaios so it can roar trap your opponent. This makes me think HGE is the better skill overall than KO negate, but we'll need to test these skills against eachother once we build gunning sets for them. Of course, due to the counterpicking issue, the opponent could also just pick a monster that doesn't roar against a HGE opponent and have an advantage, though picking a monster other than black gravios is a disadvantage all on its own.
