Why do so many successful people still feel restless, hollow, and unfulfilled? Søren Kierkegaard warned that despair doesn’t always look like sadness or failure. In fact, real despair comes with success, applause, productivity, and approval, you slowly lose your sense of self. In this video, I explore Kierkegaard’s understanding of despair, identity, and achievement, and how these alone cannot anchor a meaningful life. I also draw connections to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who saw how performance-driven faith and cultural conformity can hollow out discipleship. This is not a critique of success, but a reflection of what forms us, and how prioritizing success over a faith relationship with God, can slowly deform us. When identity is built on performance rather than rooted in Christ, despair reigns supreme in our lives. Topics covered: Kierkegaard’s concept of despair and the self Why success can conceal spiritual disintegration The danger of crowd identity and public approval Bonhoeffer on formation, discipleship, and costly obedience Why formation must come before performance Steve Stanley, Ph.D. Formed, Not Performed
