Mildred Dresselhaus - 2017 Laureate of The Franklin Institute in Materials Science and Engineering

This year’s Benjamin Franklin Medal in Materials Science and Engineering is being awarded posthumously to Mildred S. Dresselhaus. Known as the “Queen of Carbon,” Dresselhaus was an American engineer who pioneered research on graphite, carbon nanotubes, and low-dimensional thermoelectrics. In 1967, she joined the faculty at Massachusetts Institute of Technology starting her 60 year career at the university. By 1985, she was appointed the first female Institute Professor at MIT. She also served as the director of the Office of Science at the U.S. Department of Energy from 2000 to 2001. On February 20, 2017, Mildred S.
