In the 1880’s, as part of the modified and amended Pennsylvania Main Line of Public Works legislation, a railway route was in its construction phase along an east west corridor on the lower portion of Pennsylvania to cope with the impassibility of the Allegheny Mountains. A total of 4.5 miles of tunnel was dug through seven mountains to achieve this goal, but ended up never getting used due to the already completed and efficiency of the canals. Welcome to the location formally named in 1968, the 13 mile stretch of the abandoned portion for America’s First Super Highway, the Abandoned Turnpike Tunnels.
