Only the few, the talented, and the brave enter a Minnesota State Fair art contest where entries are made entirely out of seeds. The Crop Art contest celebrates 50 years this year at the State Fair. Entrants are creative, yet deliberate and meticulous with their work. "I always enjoyed looking at them," says Jordan Lockman, an entrant from Maple Grove. "The first two years I stopped and looked at it and made sure it was one of our stops. Then I decided, why don't we just try it?" Lockman is a landscape architect and an avid gardener. In college, he minored in art. So, a category where he could apply his creativity to using up expired garden seeds seemed a perfect fit. He researched seed art on the web. He experimented. He found out using tacky glue and a skewer to place individual seeds would become his method of choice. This year, Lockman earned a blue ribbon for a picture of a fish jumping out at a worm and an award of merit for a nod to geocaching's 15th anniversary. "I didn't do it to get a ribbon," says Lockman. "I did it to try it." But he also creates crop art now as a way to carve out quality time with his family. Seven-year-old Max Lockman entered for the first time and 4-year-old Anna also created her own seed art. Both kids admit the seeds can create quite a mess, but it's a fun activity. "It's really easy for us to get busy with life. This is something we can do at the table together," says Lockman. "We only make a giant mess every once in awhile."
