Madison, Wisconsin's Fire Town launched in August of 1986 with this jangle pop masterpiece off their self-released album, "In the Heart of the Heart Country." This video competed on Used-to-Have-Music Television's "Basement Tapes" on December 4, 1986 (add a day for the East Coast) -- which, sadly, was host Martha Quinn's final episode. Although the network seemingly wanted it to win, it finished in 2nd place with 29% of the vote. Unfazed by the loss, Atlantic Records, who were monitoring the show, had no interest in the winning band. They disregarded the public's choice and promptly signed Fire Town, re-releasing their debut LP and the "Carry the Torch" video in May and June of 1987, respectively. (This is the Atlantic version of the clip, as evidenced by the copyright, which isn't terribly different from the "Basement Tapes" version.) They also put it out as a single, though it wasn't any more successful in the marketplace than it had been in the competition. Fire Town eventually scored a Top 20 Billboard Modern Rock hit with "The Good Life" in early 1989, but it wasn't enough to continue in the face of two poor-selling albums. So instead, half the band, lead singer Doug "Duke" Erikson and drummer Butch Vig, hooked up with Shirley Manson to make garbage. The farmhouse seen in the video had a tragic outcome shortly after production wrapped. It burned down. Of course. Next time, try carrying the torches away from the wood, guys. UPDATE 4/24/23: Half of Fire Town's "Basement Tapes" episode is on YouTube as of today, at • MTV Basement Tapes 1986 (Full Show) . Along with this clip, it contains the 5 videos they competed against: Oswald and the Herringbones - "Be by Yourself" (Columbus, OH) -- which won; No Excuse - "My Heart Is with You" (Chicago, IL); Debi Hawkins (McLendon) - "Dusk Dark" (New York, NY); C-Streat - "Cool Shoes" (Everett and Boston, MA); Look-a-Like - "Windows" (Mendham Township and Morristown, NJ). As everybody can see for themselves now, Fire Town were leading the voting by a sizeable amount at the first update but sunk to second after the phone lines closed. Granted, they ended up getting about five times more rotation than OATH got. Fire Town was: Phil Davis - lead vocals, guitar, keyboards Doug Erikson - lead vocals, guitar, keyboards Tom LaVarda - bass Butch Vig - drums, guitar, keyboards, backing vocals "Carry the Torch" written by Phil Davis/Doug Erikson and produced by Fire Town. Video produced and directed by Jeff Schultz.
