Dún Laoghaire / Sandycove high spring tides | 05 February 2026

On 05 February 2026, Storm Leonardo to the south of Ireland drew in a strong easterly flow which combined with high tides after the recent full moon was a perfect storm scenario for some big waves on the east coast of the island. Large waves here are rather unusual due to Ireland's prevailing wind direction being westerly and the Irish Sea is a small body of water so sea fetch is small. Dún Laoghaire is one of the most exposed parts of Dublin to an easterly wind leading to overtopping waves. Scotman's Bay between Dún Laoghaire East Pier and the Forty Foot is especially notorious for this and I have captured a few clips here of some of the many huge waves I observed in February 2026. There was localised flooding further up Sandycove but it was only temporary until the tide had receded. Please follow me on my socials. I am everywhere!
