Communist State Security made an example of them, and the loyal servants of the system followed through for 25 years. Why did the all-powerful government feel so threatened by a bunch of teens playing a little game? László’s father was the model of party loyalty, asking the court to punish his own son as severely as possible, as if the boy were a stranger to him. After László’s release from prison, the machine of communism tried to break his spirit, humiliating him at every turn as he grew up and tried to make a life for himself as an adult. László Kovács, the main character of my film, never boasted the hardships he survived; instead, he seemed to carry their weight around with shame. A fateful phone conversation between us started it all.
