In this first video we are going to look at a really simple and effective way to establish good balance in your stroke. In fact it’s so simple I worry many of you will overlook this exercise. Smart doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes the simple answer is the best approach. So, what do we mean by balance? We're referring to you body position in the water, specifically your head position relative to your feet. Often new swimmers struggle because they are unbalanced - their legs are underwater and dragging along behind, creating drag, slowing you down, and making you work harder. A balanced body position is when your head and legs are level. We are looking for: 1. Nose down, back of head out of the water. Try to feel the water line across the back of your head. Nose down, neck and shoulder relaxed. 2. A gentle kick that creates a small splash. Try to feel you feet making a splash - this is instant feedback telling you the legs are up at the surface and now dragging. Anyone can do this drill. We use it in all our courses from new adult swimmers to the masters classes. Unless you are easily swimming at a pace of 1:30 per 100m you should ditch the kick board and do this exercise instead. If you swim with balance, you swim with less effort. Thanks for reading and watching, now get to the pool and Swim Smart! www.coach-stewart.com www.swimsmart.ca
