Today the Firebird version 5 is officially released, and available for use in production on 11 platforms. Many thanks to the core developers for their hard work, thanks to sponsors of Firebird Foundation and members of Firebird Foundation for financing the development. I would like to devote this short presentation to answer the simple question - Why is it important to migrate to Firebird 5? There are 2 main reasons to migrate - improve your database and stay on the actual version. First of all, Firebird 5 introduces a lot of new features even compared with Firebird 4: parallel operations, improved optimizer, better scalability, new SQL, and many more. Second, Firebird 5 offers an incredibly easy migration process: for users of Firebird 4 it even does not require backup and restore, and for users on old Firebird 3 and 2.5 there is DataTypeCompatibility parameter and many other options to make the migration smooth and fast. Third, in order to enjoy the improvements in performance and stability of Firebird 5, the minimal efforts are required: immediately after the migration your queries will be optimized and executed in the new way, without necessity to tweak or change them. The majority of beta testers claimed that they noticed improvements in performance immediately after the migration. For details about new features please read Release Notes for Firebird and series of articles "Detailed New Features of Firebird 5". The second big reason for upgrading is to stay on the actual version. According to recent polls, around 40% of Firebird users are still running version 2.5. Version 2.5 was released in 2010, almost 14 years ago. It was a very good version at that time, but it cannot be compared with modern versions of Firebird. 2.5 is not supported by Firebird Project, and soon the same will happen with version 3, since Firebird Projects supports During 14 years Firebird Project has made tons of improvements, and now is the best time to jump directly from version 2.5. By jump I do not mean that you need to do backup/restore of your production databases tonight and put it to production without testing. Jump means that it is possible to directly migrate your databases from 2.5 to 5.0, or 3.0 to 5.0, without intermediate migrations. So, if you have waited for the sign "migrate now!" - here it is. Firebird 5 is the best migration option for many years: you can migrate easily, receive many benefits with minimum efforts, and catch on a lot of missed capabilities. So, please read Release Notes, convert your database to Firebird and start testing your applications with Firebird 5. And, last but not least, become a member of the Firebird Foundation, to support development of the Firebird database! Thank you!
