[Grade 3.5] I wrote this as an homage to Omar Thomas's arrangement and my love for the piece. It was an earworm of mine for the longest time and when I was presented an opportunity to write something for my band I took the chance to attempt my own arrangement. I mostly used Tennesse Ernie Ford's rendition as a basal idea and threw my own spin on it. I am one for spontaniety, but in a controled way, and I thought it to be a bit of a waste if I did not spin this melody in as many stylistic threads as I could in 6 minutes. This arrangement of Shenandoah will surely challenge your ensemble's ability to change styles on a whim. From ballade-like chorales to bombastic marches I enjoyed making this from start to finish and I hope you do playing it. Now I will paint the picture I had for the piece: I chose the small town of Rocheport, Missouri to base the piece in, and in this world I conjured up the bridge over the river was a cultural focal point. It begins with a foggy, downcast, summer morning with birds chirping in the background, bustling until the world stops for the sun to make its declaration of morning. The bridge, river, and its inhabitants enjoy a moment of warmth and sunshine before the rainclouds begin to gather overhead foreboding rain. The rain is heavy but unobtrusive while, slowly, the thunder lulls in, followed briefly by the wind. For what seems like only moments the storm rages and promptly vanishes without a second thought. The bridge stands unbothered, stoic even, by the weather and merely waits for the parade of musicians to march across its breadth to celebrate the rainfall's passing. The celebration dies down and the sun begins to sink as the humidity caused by the rain slowly turns back into fog, blanketing the bridge as if to tuck it in for a good night's rest as the bridge stands aweigh, 'cross the wide Missouri.
