Research funders and performers are hiring at a rapid pace and networks are developing quickly. Meanwhile, the European Commission is rolling out policy on research management following the recognition by the council of the need for the professionalisation research management. But what is research management? It is lacking a clear definition but is interpreted very broadly to include all supporting, funding, or managing research. If you are reading this, you are probably a research manager but may not realise it. This discussion will give you an insight into bottom-up activities in research management and connect it to European policy while emphasizing the importance of the national level. The RM Roadmap pilot project brings all this together to plot a course for the future of Research Management in Europe.
