Why would we want to hang so high in the tree canopy? BECAUSE IT'S FREAKING SPECTACULAR that's why! Justin and I spent 3 days on the North Shore of Minnesota hoping to fill our need for vertical adventures. The first night was 35*F, rainy, and dark (I would seriously rather climb in a blizzard). After struggling for 2 hours to find a suitable tree to climb I spent another hour getting soaked in the canopy trying to set up climbing lines. We finally decided to camp next to the ground. The next morning Justin's positive attitude reinvigorated me so we hiked out of the forest and decided to drive further north in search of a forest with bigger trees to climb. We were successful! Our tie in point measured 83 feet to the ground which of course excludes the portion of the canopy that was too thick to climb so I am guessing the tree was somewhere between 95 and 105 feet tall. The video documents day two and three of our adventure. Enjoy! *Justin's photography website is --- http://athousandwords.xyz/ ** Description of the error that caused me to fall --- My main tie in point was in the canopy of the larger tree. I was attached to my climbing line with a GriGri. I had traversed into a neighboring tree to create an anchor point for Justin's Clark Jungle Hammock. After building the second anchor I used my lanyard to lower myself back to the big tree (as opposed to swinging uncontrolled). Unfortunately my gear was spread so thin between the two of us that I didn't have any left over locking carabineers so when I began lowering myself with a munter hitch the tail end popped through the gate and sent me for a little fall. There was still enough friction to safely lower myself but if this had been on a true weight bearing climbing line I would have fallen to the ground and got severely injured. The error was 100% mine. Please learn from my mistake.
