"Faux steel bends" as they're also known, are an important skill to have in your arsenal of tricks as a lead guitarist. Not only can they provide you with an endless supply of snappy, twangy country licks, but they can also be used in a much more ambient, layered soundscape type of a way to add ethereal beauty to your playing. Volume swells are seen as something of a "dark art", but like anything, spend some time getting these movements into your muscle memory and before long you'll find yourself 'violin-ing" left, right and centre! ;) Aside from all of that, this is a good lesson for exploring triads and double stops too!
