Why do autistic people gravitate towards autistic coded characters more than written examples of autism in movies? For the longest time now, Hollywood, and other avenues of popular media, have been portraying autism in their media, with the first famous example being the film Rain Man. However, even though media claims these movies are made FOR autistic people, it's clear they are only made with the intent of lifting neurotypical people, and using autistic characters to do so. It's because of this, that autistic people generally don't like explicit autism representation in media, but rather, they enjoy autistic coded characters, like Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, Tails from Sonic, and Ariel from The Little Mermaid, since they speak far more to them than explicitly stated autistic characters. But...why is this? Well that's what I want to answer today. Let's dive into why autistic coded characters seem to work far better than explicitly stated autistic characters in media, and what Hollywood needs to do better. 0:00 Intro - Despite knowledge on autism growing, representation in media is still not great 2:50 Autistic people like autistic coded characters far more - but why? 4:30 Rain Man modeled its "portrayal" of autism after someone with FG syndrome, not autism, causing many misconceptions about autism for a long time 10:00 Ariel, an autistic coded character, appealed far more to autistic people in the 1980s than Rain Man 12:00 The 1990s were no better at portraying autism, thanks to Mercury Rising and Bruce Willis spreading harmful ideas about autism 14:30 Tails was a 90s character who appealed far better to autistic people 16:20 I Am Sam was the straw that broke the autistic camel's back 20:10 The 2000s had MUCH better autism rep with its autistic coded characters, plus Mary and Max 24:14 The Good Doctor is some of the worst "autism rep" ever - Steins;Gate is much better 29:00 My shifted view on Love on the Spectrum, featuring Dejavudea 32:00 Music and The Unbreakable Boy are still awful autism movies 34:30 Conclusion Special thank you to Anthony Gramuglia for proofreading the script for this video, and Dejavudea for speaking about Love on the Spectrum here!
