Guru Arjun Dev Ji tells us that a true saint is one whose heart is filled with compassion & saves the people of the world that are drowning in attachment & ego. In the company of those saintly beings our mind goes through the process of becoming purified, taking us to our true support, Vaheguru (God). Bhai Baljit Singh explains how our mind can become like an uncleaned mirror that has been left to collect dust & dirt. The mirror reaches a point where it's unable to carry out its job of reflecting the image of whatever comes in its way. Our mind has been collecting dirt throughout many lifetimes due to remaining in ego. The ego mind makes the mind filthy by applying the dirt of such things like jealousy & hatred which doesn’t allow the mirror of mind to reflect our true-self, the jot (light) of Vaheguru which is made of anand (eternal bliss). Saints are those that help us to wash away the dirt of ego by attaching us to the Name of God. ਸਲੋਕ ॥ Shalok: ਸੰਤ ਉਧਰਣ ਦਇਆਲੰ ਆਸਰੰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥ The Merciful Lord is the Savior of the Saints; their only support is to sing the Kirtan of Vaheguru's Praises. ਨਿਰਮਲੰ ਸੰਤ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਓਟ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਹ ॥੧॥ One becomes immaculate and pure, by associating with the Saints, O Nanak, and taking the Protection of the Transcendent Lord. ਚੰਦਨ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਸਰਦ ਰੁਤਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਘਾਂਮ ॥ The burning of the heart is not dispelled at all, by sandalwood paste, the moon, or the cold season. ਸੀਤਲੁ ਥੀਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਪੰਦੜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੨॥ It only becomes cool, O Nanak, by chanting the Name of Vaheguru.
