Rog was the mighty Gnome-lord of the Hammer of Wrath, one of the heroic Houses of Gondolin in Tolkien’s earliest legendarium, The Book of Lost Tales. A blacksmith and warrior without equal, Rog was said to be the strongest of the Noldoli and among the greatest in valour. “Who now shall fear the Balrogs for all their terror? … Come ye of the Hammer of Wrath and we will smite them for their evil.” — Rog, The Fall of Gondolin During the Fall of Gondolin, Rog led his warriors in a desperate stand against the Balrogs and Orcs that stormed the northern gate. Though vastly outnumbered, they fought with unmatched fury—slaying several Balrogs, a feat never before accomplished by Elves or Men. Surrounded and with no path of retreat, Rog and the folk of the Hammer of Wrath made their final charge, perishing to the last—but leaving behind a legacy of courage and defiance that echoed through Tolkien’s early mythos. Lyrics - From the forges deep beneath the stone, Where Aulë’s fire was their own, Rose Rog, the smith with iron eyes, When Gondolin burned and filled the skies. Balrog by Balrog—down they bled, As Rog strode forth through flame and dread! The lowly smiths became the storm, And broke the night in iron form!
