Surah Al-Mujādilah, the fifty-eighth chapter of the Holy Quran, is a Madani Surah that addresses social justice, the sanctity of family relations, and the importance of truthful conduct within the Muslim community. Named after the woman who pleaded her case before the Prophet ﷺ regarding an unjust pre-Islamic practice, this Surah affirms that Allah hears every sincere voice and establishes fair rulings to protect dignity and rights. Reason of Revelation (Asbāb an-Nuzūl): This Surah was revealed after Khawlah bint Tha‘labah complained about her husband’s declaration of ẓihār, a harmful custom that left women in hardship. Allah responded directly to her plea, abolishing injustice and prescribing expiation for the practice. The Surah also addressed hypocritical behavior, secret conspiracies, and the need for proper etiquette in gatherings, emphasizing that Allah knows all that is spoken privately and publicly. Virtues & Importance: • Demonstrates that Allah hears every sincere supplication. • Protects the rights and dignity of women and families. • Abolishes unjust social customs and establishes fairness. • Warns against hypocrisy and secret wrongdoing. • Encourages proper manners in assemblies and consultation. • Strengthens community ethics and accountability. • Reminds believers that Allah’s knowledge encompasses all things.
