GENERAC 2200i GENERATOR SOUND TEST - WE USE A DECIBEL METER TO MEASURE THE NOISE LEVEL OF THIS GENERATOR RUNNING AT IDLE, AT 88% LOAD, AND AT 44% LOAD AT DISTANCES OF 1 FOOT, 10 FEET, AND 25 FEET. So many people have commented on how loud our generator sounds in many of our videos. They have even shared how many decibels their generators run at, but where are they getting those numbers? The decibel measurements are really useless without more information and here's why: Generator "Perceived" Noise Levels depend on several factors: 1. The running wattage of the generator - bigger generators will simply run louder 2. The distance the decibel meter is from the generator - closer means louder! 3. The side of the generator the meter is held - in front, in back by the exhaust, or on the side? 4. The load on the generator - most generators companies rate the decibel level at a 25% load. They don't tell you if that is 25% of the starting wattage or 25% of the running wattage. Not only that, but a 25% load will be different for generators of different wattages. A 25% load on this generator at 1700 running watts would be 425 Watts. A 25% load on a generator running wattage of 1800 would obviously be different. Bottom line: there are NO SET INDUSTRY STANDARDS for rating the sound level of portable generators! The Generac 2200i generator has a starting wattage of 2200 and a running wattage of 1700. In the video we use a portable electric heater that uses 1500 watts on high (thats an 88% load) and 750 watts on low (thats a 44%) load. We also know the decibel meter has a plus/minus error factor, but that would be consistent throughout the video so we are choosing to ignore that. This is why we choose to round the decibels up, so in reality and with a better decibel meter, the decibels might actually measure less.
