Welcome to Island Uncharted — my name’s Jon, and on this channel I explore the remote backroads, forgotten history, and wild places of Vancouver Island and beyond. In this episode, we head deep into Northern Vancouver Island where WWII history and raw geology collide. This adventure takes us hiking to a World War II plane crash site, into the historic gold rush town of Zeballos, and down into the incredible Little Huson Cave system in the Nimpkish Valley. ✈️ WWII Dakota 576 Crash Site – Port Hardy On April 19, 1944, a Royal Canadian Air Force Dakota 576 ran out of fuel during a training mission just four miles from the Port Hardy airfield. Two young airmen lost their lives, and the wreckage still rests in the forest today — a powerful and humbling reminder of Vancouver Island’s WWII past. ⛏️ Zeballos – Vancouver Island’s Forgotten Gold Rush Town Once a booming mining hub in the 1930s, Zeballos was filled with hotels, shops, and industry. Today, it’s a quiet and remote coastal community surrounded by rugged mountains, rivers, and the echoes of its gold rush history. 🌊 Little Huson Caves – Nimpkish Valley Formed over 200 million years ago, the Little Huson Caves are a limestone karst system shaped by glaciers and meltwater following the last ice age. With accessible trails, rushing turquoise water, and dramatic cave formations, it’s one of the most unique natural wonders on Vancouver Island. 📍 In this episode, you’ll see: • Hiking to the WWII Dakota 576 impact site near Port Hardy • The history of the crash and the airmen involved • Exploring Zeballos and its mining-era past • Descending into the Little Huson Caves • Off-the-beaten-path travel on Northern Vancouver Island If you enjoy hidden history, abandoned places, cave exploration, remote towns, WWII crash sites, and Vancouver Island adventures, you’re in the right place. 👉 Like, comment, and subscribe for new Island Uncharted adventures every week. 🔔 Subscribe here: / @islanduncharted 💬 Have you been to Zeballos or Little Huson Caves?
