National Trust Wales Sand Art 2015 - Commemorating 50 years of the Neptune Coastline Campaign

Sand artist Marc Treanor assisted by a team of local volunteers recently worked for six hours to create a giant map of the UK, adorning it with sandcastles and flags to signal each area of the coastline that has been saved through the National Trust Neptune campaign, which now stands at 775 miles, including 100 miles in Wales. The map was etched into the sands at Whiteford Burrows, the first ever coastal area protected by the project in 1965. At the time Whiteford Burrows faced an uncertain future, with plans for a landfill site on the cards. Today it's a National Nature Reserve and one of the finest examples of sand dune habitat in Britain, providing a haven for wildlife and the thousands of people that visit each year
