Toti Boutique Rooms in Kalambaka: https://booking.tpo.lv/4kjPIDxP --------------- Visiting the monasteries of Meteora had been on our bucket list for years, and this video shares our full experience of exploring one of Greece’s most extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Located in central Greece, Meteora is famous for its monasteries perched on dramatic cliffs, built by monks in the 14th century using ropes and pulleys to haul up materials. Today, six monasteries remain active and open to visitors, each with incredible views over the valley. We based ourselves in Kalambaka, the small town at the foot of Meteora. Unlike Kastraki, Kalambaka has plenty of restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, and accommodation within walking distance, plus direct access to hiking trails. From Athens, we booked a combined train and bus ticket via Hellenic Train, changing at Paleofarsalos before arriving in Kalambaka about five hours later. On our first afternoon, we tried the self-guided hike to Holy Trinity Monastery, the only trail starting directly from Kalambaka. Along the way, we passed small Orthodox and Byzantine churches before climbing the shaded stone path to the monastery. Even though it was closed when we arrived, the panoramic views made the effort worthwhile. The next day, we joined a minibus tour covering all six active monasteries, stopping inside three. Our first visit was the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, the oldest and largest monastery. Entry is €5, and women must wear skirts or shawls, which are provided at the entrance. Inside, we explored chapels, terraces, and a workshop while enjoying incredible views over Meteora’s karst landscape. Our favorite was the Monastery of St. Varlaam, known for its flower-filled courtyard, small museum, and preserved pulley system once used to haul supplies up the cliffs. The monks here also produce wine, available for purchase in the gift shop. We also stopped at the Holy Monastery of Rousanou, smaller than the others but beautifully situated. Each monastery charges €5 entry, so costs add up if you plan to visit several. Public buses were suspended during our visit, so tours are the easiest way to get around, though it’s worth checking at the Kalambaka bus station for seasonal options. When not exploring the monasteries, we enjoyed Kalambaka’s café culture. Favorites included Dall’Inizio Café for coffee with mountain views, Octo for freddo espresso and brunch, and Kalimera for fresh bougatsa pastries. Meteora is a destination that combines history, spirituality, and breathtaking natural beauty.
