Presenter - Roberta De Bei (The University of Adelaide) Recorded 15 September 2016 Canopy size, vigour, productivity assessment, disease detection, water management and fruit flavour profile are key factors in final wine quality but are difficult for growers to objectively assess and manage in the vineyard. Instantaneous canopy vigour, yield, water status and biotic and abiotic stress symptoms can all conceivably be monitored using novel and affordable image acquisition and analysis technology. With smart phone and tablet PCs being now ubiquitous and in an effort to better inform vineyard management decisions, a number of research projects have developed grower-friendly tools in the form of apps, to accurately, easily and cost-effectively generate information on vineyard performance. This work describes a new app (VitiCanopy) developed by The University of Adelaide. VitiCanopy uses the frontal in-built camera and GPS capabilities of smart phones and tablet PCs to analysis algorithms on upward-looking digital images of canopies and calculate leaf area index (LAI), canopy porosity and other relevant canopy architecture parameters.
