Impact of expert center endoscopic assessment of confirmed low grade dysplasia diagnosed in community hospitals by Esther A. Nieuwenhuis, Sanne N. van Munster, Wouter L. Curvers et al. Summary: This retrospective study from the Netherlands included patients (n = 248) with confirmed low grade dysplasia (LGD) in Barrett’s esophagus (BE) who were referred from community hospitals to Barrett Expert Centers (BECs). The authors found that nearly 25% of patients had prevalent high grade dysplasia or cancer on repeat staging endoscopy performed in the BEC. Nearly 80% of these upstaged patients had a newly detected visible lesion. These results add further evidence that patients with BE and LGD should be referred to an expert center.
