The HOA didn’t govern my property—my home predated the association—but that didn’t stop them from trying. Almost immediately, I noticed things going wrong. My sprinkler line got clipped during routine landscaping—twice. My mailbox was ripped out of the ground and tossed in a ditch. Once, someone spilled paint down my driveway. The president, an oily guy named Curt with a bleached smile and cheap sunglasses, always acted shocked. “So sorry,” he’d say, “These things happen.” Except they were only happening to me—and to the handful of other “non-members” on our street. One night, I found my front hedge scorched. Looked like someone took a weed torch to it. That was it. I wasn’t going to be their punching bag. I installed three security cameras: front door, driveway, and side yard. Two weeks later, jackpot. The footage was crystal clear. A landscaping crew wearing HOA vests deliberately yanked my gutter off the corner of the house. They looked right at the camera. One of them even laughed. I took that clip straight to the other non-members and we compared stories. Turns out every one of us had been targeted—sprinklers, damage, even one guy’s car got egged. Then came the big reveal. One neighbor, who worked in IT, got access to the HOA’s internal Slack logs—don’t ask how. In those messages was a list. A literal blacklist. Seven property addresses, ours included, labeled “non-compliant lots – aggressive discouragement recommended.” One message from Curt: “Have the crew ‘mess up’ their yards again. Can’t believe they get to live here for free.” I printed everything. The footage, the messages, the list. We held a neighborhood meeting at the community center. The board didn’t expect us to show up—especially not with a projector. Curt turned white when his own message popped up on the screen. When the video played, the room went silent. Then the shouting started—homeowners demanding resignations, refunds, audits. The board tried to deflect, but we’d brought an attorney. One with a booming voice and a thick folder of evidence. The fallout was brutal. Curt resigned that night. Three board members followed. The HOA was slapped with multiple lawsuits—harassment, property damage, conspiracy. The landscaping company? Fired. Turns out they had a “preferred contractor” deal with Curt under the table. Within a month, the HOA was gutted. A new board was elected—one that vowed never to treat non-members like second-class citizens again. And me? I reinstalled my mailbox. Planted a new hedge. And made damn sure the cameras stayed up—just in case someone else forgot what justice looks like.
