The forms of dealing with the past are very diverse. The ten-part event series “Transitional Justice” aims to show different aspects of social and legal processes of coming to terms with the past after system upheavals and to provide insights into the culture and politics of remembrance in their respective national contexts. The series will be moderated by Tamina Kutscher, editor-in-chief of dekoder.org. The online discussion “New Structures or Old Networks?” will focus on the processes of transitional justice in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. How did these countries deal with their communist past? Which forms of coming to terms with the past were predominant? Is there a connection between historical-political narratives and the large influx of populist and in part openly nationalist parties? What influence do these political currents have on the process of dealing with the past and what goals do they pursue? Was it possible to create new structures or do the old networks continue to determine the policy of these states? The discussion will be held in German and English, simultaneously translated and broadcast on two livestreams in German and English. You are welcome to participate with questions and comments in the Youtube chat or via e-mail to veranstaltungen@bundesstiftung-aufarbeitung.de.
