Philip Lewis and his Orchestra play a German Fox-Trot, "Der Duft Der Eine Schöne Frau Begleitet", featuring a vocal in German by Maurice Elwin and some nice hot playing in the last chorus by Sylvester Ahola and Danny Polo. PHILIP LEWIS AND HIS ORCHESTRA Arthur Lally, alto sax and baritone sax, directing: Sylvester Ahola - trumpet / Danny Polo - alto sax and clarinet / George Smith - tenor sax / Claude Ivy - piano / Joe Brannelly - banjo / Tiny Stock - brass bass / Max Bacon - drums, vibraphone / Maurice Elwin - vocals Recorded at Chenil Galleries, Chelsea, London, October 15th, 1929 FMB-557-2 Der Duft Der Eine Schone Frau Begleitet Decca test pressing A number of British recording companies - including HMV, Columbia and Decca - occasionally recorded dance band sides specifically for overseas markets, such as Germany, France, Holland, Spain and Italy, as well as the Scandinavian countries. Often, the English vocals would be replaced by an instrumental passage but sometimes vocals would be sung in the language of the country that the record was to be sold in. Maurice Elwin sounds quite fluent singing German, and certainly doesn't seem to be merely aping the words. Did he live and work in Germany at some stage? I have found nothing to indicate that this was the case. He was born Norman MacPhail Blair in 1896, in Uddingston, Scotland and died in Hampstead, London in 1975. This is a vinyl master test that was pressed in the 1990s using one of the original metal stampers. I do not know if the recording was actually ever issued; the FMB Foreign series Deccas are extremely rare and I've never seen an original issue. Moreover, "British Dance Bands On Record" does not give a catalogue number for this side, nor for the other three recordings waxed on the same day (all German songs with vocals in German by Elwin). "Der Duft Der Eine Schöne Frau Begleitet" translates (I think!) as "The Perfume Of A Beautiful Woman". It was a reasonably popular song in Germany and Austria, with music by Hans May and lyrics by "Roxy", a collaborative alias used by songwriters Ernst Neubach, Armin Robinson and Robert Gilbert.
