Today on Hidden TN State Parks, we’re exploring Roan Mountain State Park in northeast Tennessee. In Part One, we begin at the visitors center to learn about the park’s layered history—from early Appalachian settlement and mining to its designation as a Tennessee state park. From there, we head out onto the peaceful Peg Leg Mine Trail, following the Doe River and walking beneath towering rhododendrons that give this mountain its quiet, enchanted feel. We also talk about the role rhododendrons play in the ecosystem and the annual Rhododendron Festival that celebrates their blooms each spring.
