Soap has saved more lives than every antibiotic, vaccine, and surgery combined — and for most of human history, people refused to use it. This is the full history of cleanliness, from the first soap recipe ever recorded to the doctor who was destroyed for proving handwashing works. In this video, we trace the history of soap across five thousand years. We start with a Sumerian clay tablet from 2800 BC that contains the oldest known soap formula. We move through ancient Rome, where massive public baths existed but soap was barely used on the body. We cover medieval Europe, where the Church and the medical establishment actively discouraged bathing — creating centuries of deliberate filth that contributed to catastrophic plagues. Then we tell the story of Ignaz Semmelweis, the Hungarian physician who proved in 1847 that handwashing with a simple chlorinated solution could cut maternity ward deaths by ninety percent. His colleagues called him a madman. They destroyed his career. He died in an asylum at forty-seven — from the same type of infection he had spent his life trying to prevent. We follow soap through the Industrial Revolution, when companies like Lever Brothers and Procter & Gamble turned it from a luxury into a household staple. And we end in March 2020, when a global pandemic reminded the entire world of a truth that had been established science for over a hundred and seventy years: wash your hands. If you’re interested in history, public health, the stories behind everyday objects, or how institutions resist simple truths when those truths are inconvenient — this one is for you.
