THE CACTUS BLOSSOMS with JD McPHERSON - NO MORE CRYING THE BLUES - TWSWPWK

2013 was the year I first met Jack and Page - the brothers who form The Cactus Blossoms -backstage at the legendary First Ave in their hometown of Minneapolis, MN. They'd been added as strong local support for one of my first gigs at that venue (which is now among my favorite spots to work a gig), and I'd been told to "scope them out" by my management. I really couldn't believe what I heard. Their voices together were carved out of time, with earnest songs that ranged from devil-may-care humor to alone-on-an-ice floe heartbreaking. We recorded "You're Dreaming", their debut record, completely live in Alex Hall's living room. Our dear friends Beau Sample (bass) and Joel Paterson (guitar/steel) helped round out the personnel. I think we caught lightning in a bottle on a few of those tunes. I cooked beans and cornbread for everyone. My most recent visit to First Ave, I wrangled the brothers along with Beau , and recorded this backstage cover of Alton & Jimmy's Sun records classic "No More Crying the Blues", A tune I had recommended as a cover for the album. The years are flying by, and my memories making music with these fellow are some I cherish most.
