In this video, Patrick shares why making this episode was genuinely difficult. Most of the time, the “abusive parent” is discussed inside the family, through roles like the narcissistic parent, the enabler, and the scapegoat. Here, Patrick widens the lens to explore how similar trauma patterns can show up at a societal level through gaslighting, enforcer dynamics, and discard phases. The video begins with a personal family story from County Kerry, Ireland in 1920, when a home invasion by the Black and Tans altered his family’s lineage. Patrick uses that story, along with historical examples like Hitler’s SA and a present-day lens on ICE, to examine a concept he calls the Abusive Parent State. Patrick is clear about the intent: this is not a shift into political commentary and not a departure from childhood trauma recovery. He approaches this as a trauma therapist focused on pattern recognition and the way “legal” abuse can create long-term hypervigilance that lives on through generations, shaping nervous systems, parenting, and family legacies. In this video, we discuss: The clinical “blueprint” of state-sponsored terror The “golden child to scapegoat” pipeline and why enforcers are often betrayed The generational impact of “legal” home invasions How to maintain humanity when the “parent state” becomes the abuser This is a heavy video focused on collective trauma and cycle-breaking. Please take care of yourself while watching, and feel free to share your reflections in the comments.
