At this year's Aspen Ideas Festival, we asked a group of professors, activists, and authors to weigh in on the current discussion around policing methods. "Police must stop thinking about crime reduction as self-justifying," says Yale professor Tracey Meares. However, former NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly believes the severity of the situation is slightly overblown: "The police have a much better relationship with communities of color than you would see portrayed in the media," he said. "When there's a bad situation, it gets all the attention." Other panelists include Clifton Kinnie, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Bruce Western.
