If you've been to Chelsea Market odds are you know it was once headquarters of the National Biscuit Company, later called Nabisco. What you may not know is that it is also the birthplace of one of the world's most famous cookie: the Oreo. Culinary historian Andrew Smith says Nabisco wasn't the first to come up with the crunchy chocolatey creamy cookie. You can trace Oreo's origins back even further to 1908 with the Hydrox cookie. Nabisco tweaked the formula and added more sugar. The Oreo was born. In the decades that followed, Oreo would become a household name, with more than 362 billion cookies twisted, dunked, and whatever else we do to devour them. In the 1970s, Oreo got all fancy with different flavors and sizes. But most people we talked to agree: you can dress it up all you want, but there is nothing like the original. --JENNIFER LAHMERS
