Ash Meadows is the largest remaining oasis in the Mojave Desert and is home to Devil's Hole, Longstreet Cabin, and Point of Rocks. It is a rare and unique ecosystem of springs fed by fossil water originating in the last ice age and home to four endangered fish species and eight threatened or endangered plant species. The Devil's Hole located within the refuge and managed by Death Valley National Park is a water filled cavern. Swimming in the cavern waters, the smallest and rarest pupfish in the worls, the Devil's Hole Pupfish. While scuba divers have mapped a depth of 500 feet, the bottom has never been found. Earthquakes from around the world have been known to stir waves as high as 6 feet in Devil's Hole. Point of Rocks provides a boardwalk leading to Kings Pool, once believed by the Shoshone to be a place of power, it is now a viewing spot through crystal blue waters of the spring for endangered pupfish. The Longstreet Cabin is a historic stone cabin built by famed gunslinger Jack Longstreet built into a mound above an underground spring to keep the inside temperatures cooler for food storage. The nearby spring pool appears to be boiling because of sand bellowing up from the depths.
