Neutrog TV | How do I boost soil microbial activity in autumn?

Neutrog’s resident expert Dr Uwe Stroeher talks about the role of soil microbes in garden health, along with his recommendation for a top fertiliser to help boost plant performance. 🌿Seamungus is a soil and plant conditioner, made by combining the very best composted raw materials – seaweed, fish, humic acid and manure. It’s also a health tonic and planting food for all plants including natives, lawns and bare-rooted roses. Seamungus undergoes a unique composting process, specifically developed to stabilise the nutrients, maximise nutrient availability and to ensure the product is free of any parasites, pathogens and weed seeds. Most importantly, the resultant product retains the microbiology necessary for a 'living' product. Whilst Seamungus contains a wide range and good levels of plant nutrients, it is perhaps the additional unique properties contained within seaweed that provide the catalyst for providing higher yields of sustained quality. Seamungus will help your plants resist heat, drought and frost, along with pests and disease. It will retain up to 70% of its own weight in moisture – significantly increasing the soil’s ability to hold onto water and nutrients. Hi Uwe Hi Graham, interestingly the biological activity of soil microbes is driven by the same factors that influence plant growth, moisture, temperature and nutrients. In summer when the soil moisture drops and temperatures of soils is high microbial activity slows down. This means in your garden the breakdown of organic material and nutrient cycling slows down. The knock-on effect of this is a reduction in nutrient availability for your plants. Because of a drop in soil temperature and increased moisture is why autumn is a great time for soils and plants to recover plants from summer stress. The important thing to remember is when working with biological systems such as soil microbes what you do in autumn and winter can in fact have marked influence in the coming spring. Microbes activity in Autumn stabilise nutrients ready for plants in spring. So how do start your soil and plant recovery program? The great thing is that microbes unlike say plants reproduce very quickly under the right conditions. Some bacteria can double their numbers every 9 minutes in a lab, in the soil it takes longer. However, you can expect a very quick turnaround from an almost dead soil to one teeming with microbes. We spoke about mulches to trap soil warmth and soil moisture shouldn’t be an issue now. The only thing lacking is nutrients because bacteria and fungi need the same nutrients that plants do, nitrogen, phosphate, potassium and those micronutrients. If you have spread WhoFlungDung then you got a fair smattering of these. However, if you have used other sources of mulch especially some of the garden mulches made of ground up green waste you are most likely lacking these nutrients. So you should consider getting some organic fertiliser onto your soil I like to use Seamungus. So do you like to use Seamungus? Seamungus is slightly different to other organic fertilisers, it naturally contains essential nutrients for plants and microbes, perhaps almost as important is that it contains humic material. Humics do a great job holding onto micronutrients, which often leach away. As rains begin to increase the chance of nutrient runoff escalates and I try to avoid this. My own block is slopping and the last thing I want it those nutrients in the local waterways. Furthermore, Seamungus provides those microbes the essential carbon to grow and multiply and to microbes carbon is their energy source. So using your compost or mulch together with Seamungus results in a rapid increase in microbial activity in autumn soils. So if you want to repair your soil and get it healthy again after summer, apply some Seamungus and compost. Seamungus from Neutrog is available from Bunnings, hardware outlets and of course good nurseries and garden centres.
