Ubykh recording (1) “Hasan’s Tale”

The recently extinct Ubykh language belonged to the Northwest Caucasian language family and was once spoken by the Ubykh people that have lived on the Black Sea coast of historical Circassia for centuries. The language had 84 consonants and only 3 phonemic vowels. The Ubykh got exiled to Ottoman lands during the Circassian genocide, where many Ubykhs still live. Professor George Hewitt of the University of London visited Turkey in 1974, where he made recordings of several Western Caucasian languages and dialects, including the Ubykh language with Tevfik Esench, the last speaker of the Ubykh language. This belongs to one of his recordings.
