Laying 14km south-west of Cork city, Knockavilla hillfort (also called Clashanimud hillfort, from the Irish 'Clais na Adhmaid' meaning 'Trench of the Timbers') has been described as the first 'capital' of Cork. It was built over 3,200 years ago and was excavated by a team of archaeologists from University College Cork during successive years from 2004. The hillfort is composed of two concentric oval enclosures. The inner ring encompassed a strong wooden palisade of around 380 timbers. The hillfort at Clashanimud is significant for three reasons. First, it is one of the largest in Ireland. Second, it is the oldest. Third, it was protected by wooden palisades of around 380 timbers around the inner bank, yet such palisades are not a feature of Irish hillforts in general. Evidence from the excavations suggests that the hillfort was destroyed by fire shortly after it was built. There was no significant residential occupation of the hillfort's inner enclosure and was effectively abandoned after the fire. The size of the fort, its subsequent destruction and its prominence and visIbility from a wide distance, tells us something about power, conflict war and rivalry during this time.
