Working alongside cinematographer Dana Bontempo — known for his work on Bob Sumner’s “Motel Room” video — the “Margaret” video was filmed in a barn in Way’s hometown of Fort Langley, using 35mm, Super 8, and MiniDV cameras. The result is raw and hypnotic, blending nostalgic film textures with a natural, unfiltered power that mirrors the song’s emotional depth and authenticity. "Margaret" by Elliot C Way A ballad for believers in old-fashioned love — and a heartbreaker for anyone who's had to watch it slip away. Following the gritty, groove-heavy release of Fool’s Gold, Elliot C Way returns with Margaret — a slow-burning, soul-stirring ballad that trades the fire of outlaw country for the gentle ache of timeless storytelling. Originally written during his time with The Wild North, Margaret now resurfaces with a new country feel and a depth and weight that only Way could have reimagined, shaped by his evolution as a songwriter and storyteller. Where Fool’s Gold hits hard with swagger and survival, Margaret — a song written about his grandparents, Margaret and Nelson Beattie — leans into the vulnerable, the nostalgic, and the beautifully human. It tells the true story of their decades-long love — a life lived together in rural Ontario, filled with hard-won moments of grace, resilience, and devotion. At its heart, the song is a tribute to his grandmother Margaret and her quiet battle with MS — a disease that slowly changed the shape of their lives but never broke their bond. It's also a testament to his Grampap and his unwavering love and devotion to her, standing by her side through the difficult years. The song is told from grandpa's perspective, sharing their life story. Elliot would visit them in Uxbridge, ON, on their hay farm, where he got to witness the kind of rural, hardworking life that made a profound impact on him at a young age — hot, muggy summers with fireflies and iced tea, and winters playing hockey on frozen lakes or riding snowmobiles in the deep cold while visiting for Christmas. Elliot's grandpa, the patriarch of the family, was a man larger than life — a humble farmer, a handyman, a father, husband any man would hope to be. Elliot saw firsthand the power of his grandfather's love for Margaret and the care he gave her until the very end. With its soft swing, haunting melody, and Way’s unmistakable voice, Margaret feels like a song lost in time — the kind of old-fashioned love story that doesn’t often get written or lived out in today’s world. It’s a masterclass in restraint and emotional clarity, delivered with the raw honesty and depth that fans have come to expect from Way's solo work. It’s also the song that always brings someone to tears in the crowd during his live sets, reminding people of the shared human experience of losing loved ones. Produced once again by longtime collaborator and former Wild North bandmate Erik P.H. Nielsen, Margaret was recorded in the historic Studio 2 beneath CBC Vancouver — the same underground bunker where Fool’s Gold came to life. Released on The North Country Collective, the fiercely independent label Way co-founded with Bob Sumner and Nick Lawton, Margaret marks the second offering in what’s shaping up to be a powerful new chapter for the songwriter. Elliot is donating a percentage of profits from Margaret to MS Canada to honor his grandmother and will also be playing a show in Uxbridge, ON — his grandparents' hometown — on a tour to promote the singles in the winter of 2025. Whether taken as a standalone ballad or a poetic B-side to Fool’s Gold, Margaret proves that Elliot C Way isn’t just writing songs — he’s building a legacy of modern country rooted in grit, grace, and truth.
