Keeping Collier County Beaches pristine is a full-time job for many dedicated team members. In the past 10 years, the Collier County Coastal Zone Management section has overseen five beach renourishment truck haul projects plus an emergency beach berm project was needed in 2023 after serious damage from Hurricane Ian in 2022. Currently, an approximately two-mile long beach renourishment project is underway from approximately Harbour Drive to Clam Pass. Over the next few months, 312,000 tons of sand will be placed on the beach and spread out with special equipment to provide a standard 85-foot width from the dune line to the mean high-water line to provide storm protection and recreational space for residents and tourists. The project is needed to replenish the beach which experiences natural erosion throughout the year, but has also seen multiple storms including, Debby, Helene, and Milton this past hurricane season. Hours of operations are six days a week, Mondays through Saturdays, from approximately 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The project was initially scheduled to last for about six weeks, but recent pre-construction surveys indicate that more sand will be needed than previously anticipated to replace the sand lost from the 2024 storms. Completion is now anticipated in early April. The beach renourishment will be completed as quickly as possible to minimize impacts to beachgoers as well as limiting the time when sand trucks are hauling through the Park Shore neighborhood. The only beach access impacted is Horizon Way, which will be closed to the public for the duration of the project. Pedestrians and cyclists traveling along Gulf Shore Blvd., Park Shore Drive, and Harbour Drive are advised to use caution during this needed beach renourishment project.
