SOUNDBITE: (English) John Paul Dessoline, Private First Class, 101st Airborne Division: "They had a guy on the village, like on top of the building. They said he was pretty much the spotter, he had like a whole set up, some water and things like that. I was shooting on top of the building itself, we shot two HEs, which is High Explosives, in the red smoke." 12. SOUNDBITE: (English) Alberto Mendiola, Private First Class, 101st Airborne Division: "I don't know, because I was in MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) using the phone talking to my wife. I guess there was gunfire, automatic gunfire, so we all ran out and manned our positions, and returned fire. We called for the birds (helicopters) and they came in, started leading Hellfire and rockets at the enemy." 13. Wide of US Kiowa helicopter shooting a Hellfire rocket at an enemy position STORYLINE: An Associated Press photographer embedded with US soldiers at an outpost in southern Afghanistan filmed a fire fight with the Taliban on Saturday. Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division came under attack from automatic gunfire at their base, Combat Outpost Nolen, in the volatile Arghandab Valley near Kandahar city. The soldiers located an enemy spotter on a roof about 200 metres away and fired 60mm mortars and 40 mm grenades. A US Kiowa helicopter was then called in which fired a Hellfire rocket at the position. The Arghandab valley is strategic because it is a major transit route for Taliban fighters into Kandahar - where they launch quick strike bombings and assassinations before retreating. Also on Saturday five US soldiers died in bombings in the south where international forces are stepping up the fight against the insurgents. In eastern Afghanistan on Saturday two US troops were also missing, a military official said. An Afghan official said one may have been killed and the other captured by the Taliban. The latest deaths bring to 75 the number of international troops killed in Afghanistan this month, including 56 US soldiers.
